Dug
I have a co-worker that I thoroughly enjoy working with. He is very intelligent and good at what he does. He has a blog that makes tears come to my eyes every time I read it. Today the winner is this doozey. Dug additionally has a deep love and reverence towards our beloved Harmon's.

Home
I am so excited for my new home. I NEVER thought I would have my own home built. Everything I do everyday is around getting into my new home. Once we move in, I know I will have so much to do. I can't wait to be able to work in my yard - those that have known me long enough know that I have serious about this too. Just so excited!!

Taco Bell
Last night we were discussing different things in life when Taco Bell was brought up. It was discussed that each of us has our guilty pleasure there. For one it was Nachos Bell Grande and another it was a #8 - I don't remember what the #8 is. For me, it is the Crunchy Fresco Tacos. I gave in today and purchased fast food for lunch for the first time this entire year! Ok I really ran out of time last night, talking with family, for me to make lunches so Rick said, why don't you just go buy lunch tomorrow. I have a million+ options near work but one place stood out very clearly in my mind. I had to go to Taco Bell.
I remember the VERY first time I ate there. I was 17 years old and had just graduated from high school. I was visiting my dad and family in Seattle. The boy across the street was a bat boy for the Mariners and he took me to a game. After we stopped at Taco Bell. Prior to this time, we had always had Time Time. (The Taco Time on 400 south which was next door to a Taco Bell to be specific. We ate there 2 or 3 times a week in my memory. They had felt pictures on the walls of bull fighters. But Taco Time is not the point of this blog.)
I believe I ordered 2 tacos. I don't know if I specified soft or crunchy and really don't know which I received. I do remember the lovely yellow wrapping. So this boy and I were eating out Taco Bell at like 11:00 pm - really the only the acceptable time to eat Taco Bell. I do remember that for some reason I didn't eat my second taco. Not only that, I slid it under the seat of this guy's car. It was some yellow mustang type car. Something I am sure he babyed.
Now here's the thing, he ended up being a jerk and later on in life I remembered that hidden taco and laughed to myself. Even now, more than 15 years later, I still laugh at the stench that he must have found in his car weeks later.

This weekend
Been a little busy this weekend. My sister's dad, ok technically "half-blood sister" - OOO maybe I will start calling her the Half Blood Princess - anyway, my X-Stepfather passed away on Thursday. I learned this on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon I learned the preemie baby born to my aunt's x-husband (yes this is a trend) died on Saturday. He was born on Monday at 24 weeks and just wasn't strong enough.
Been doing the house and Valentine's thing too. I will get some house photos up as soon as I can.

Gardening Update

Sam's Club or Costco
I haven't had a Sam's or Costco Membership the past few years. I am going to get one when we move since I will actually have a pantry for storage room. The question is now, which one!?! Hear is my problem - when I last shopped at Costco they did not have Tyson chicken. Only Pilgrim's Pride or something like that. Well I won't eat another other than Tyson. Sam's Club did carry it. Then there is toilet paper....Sam's carried Northern. That is what we use. Costco did not carry it. I don't like Charmin, well the dude doesn't like Charmin because it leaves white cooties all over the bathroom, even if it is softer.
I don't like Kirkland brands overall but I REALLY don't like the Walton family.
What am I supposed to do?!?

Lunch Break
I was at my usual lunch hang out, the park near my work. There was only one other car in the entire parking lot when a 3rd decided to join us. This lady parked 10 feet from me! I do not understand this type of behavior. Seriously, we have over 1,000 sq ft available to park and she parks right next to me.
So what do I do? I backed up my car and moved. I was not going to have someone that close to me.
Not much later another car drives up. I look over and watch the passenger take off his jacket, put it in the backseat and commence to make out with the driver. Fortunately she was female. Nevertheless, this was some "Get a room" action. Eventually they stopped and I assume ate some food. I couldn't see that well but yes, I did continue to monitor their actions. If there was going to be a nudie show during lunch, I was going to make sure I saw it because as we all know, I have my camera in my purse! Alas, no such luck.
I eventually lost interest and went back to my book.
About 20 min later I see the couple getting out of the car and into their trunk. Then the lady starts walking towards me. I think...Oh crap! What does she want. I open my window part way and she asks if I have jumper cables. HAHAHA Their battery died!
I being the kind person I am drove over to help them out, because yes I do have jumper cables in the car. While getting them I found a few other things I have in the back of my car. My Utah Ute flag, window shades, a roll of toilet paper and an entire box of tampons!
The moral of the story...I could find a new place that was a little more secluded for lunch but I sure wouldn't get this type of free entertainment. Oh yeah, make sure your isn't going to die if you are going to go make out in it at a park.

NASCAR 2010
That's right the season is almost here. The first practice of the year is in about 33 minutes. Yes, I can watch it live online at work. Yes I am a big enough dork to do so. I can't wait for Saturday night and the Bud ShootOut. One of the funnest races of the year, even if it isn't for points.

Gardening - Soil Prep
I started taking a home gardening class last night. My stake was able to get the teacher to come teach the class which is 2 hours a week for 6 weeks. Last night was really good. I learned more about home food gardening in the 2 hours he taught then the years I spent going to Utah State University for my Ornamental Horticulture degree. Granted, home gardening is VERY different from Ornamental gardening but there are some basics that are the same. Soil Prep is one of those, which was discussed last night.
I might end up starting a gardening blog, once I have my dirt BUT until then I will post stuff here - in case you are interested.
Plants need Nutrients
Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium/Potash, Iron, Zinc, and Magnesium
If you are nitrogen deficient then your plants will be yellow/green rather than a dark green
If you have enough phosphorus and potassium, you will have healthy, strong big plants with lots of flowers and fruit
Chlorosis - happens when a plant is missing a nutrient - the leaves turn a big yellow. If the vein is still green and the rest of the leaf is yellow then you are missing Zinc. If all the little veins are showing up too then you are missing iron.
We have lots of these in the soil in Utah but it can't get to the plant because of too much calcium cabonate aka lime being in the soil. You need to free up the nutrients by adding others.
So the question is - What to add and How Much?
Use a Complete Fertilizer
16-16-8 --> 16 Nitrogen, 16 Phosphorus, 8 Potassium These ingredients are always listed in the same order. Also add some sulfer and ironite.
These also help get the pH level of the soil to be happy. In Utah we need more acidic soil which means, more sulfur.
How much - for a 180 sq ft area (30 feet long by 6 feet wide) needs 1 qt of dry ingredients. Mix 4/5 qt of the complete fertilizer with 1/5 qt of ironte. You can mix this up in a glass quart jar. Then sprinkle over your dirt - cause at this point it probably is still dirt, not soil, and roto til it into the soil.
Now what if your dirt is just that, dirt. You might have sandy dirt or clay dirt. You can fix that too. You want to create a loam. The way to do this is with organic matter because it will add things such as nitrogen to the soil. Grass clippings (DO NOT USE if you have used Weed N Feed on your lawn because it will carry over to your garden and kill all your broadleaf veggies, like tomatoes), leaves, table scraps, peat moss. Don't use manure and never use steer manure. They both have too much salt in them and that just locks up the nutrients that we are trying to free.
Here is the key - this is all to be done BEFORE you plant. You do not need to fertilize again while you are growing except for a few things - which I will mention later. As for now focus on garden prep.
An additional item you can add if you live in Utah is a soil acidifier such as Miracle Gro Azalea food or GrowMore with Soil Acidifier from IFA. This is to be done in late February, early March. This is great if you are growing perennials such as raspberries. I know the raspberries at my mom's need this desperately. Just sprinkle this mixture over the snow and the snow and rain will dissolve it into the soil 1 qt of 1/3 miracle grow, 1/3 ammonium sulfate, 1/3 ironid. Again, this is for 180 sq ft so divide as needed for a smaller area.
Basically now is the time to prepare - start thinking about what you want to do this year so in 2 weeks you can start getting your soil ready. By the end of March you will be able to have it all but ready to go.

Golf in January
On Saturday Rick and I decided we needed to do some exploring around our new stomping grounds. First we had to check out the home. The foundation is done and ready for framing.
We know where the Stansbury Park Clubhouse, Swimming Pool, Tennis Courts and Golf Course are because we drive past them to get to our new home. As Maddy and Marissa pointed out, Of course I still have a swimming pool within walking distance of my home.
We decided to find the Miller Motor Sports Park. We had been there once in 2007 for the Le Mans race and were not impressed so we thought we would see if they had upgraded. Yeah, not so much.
Then we went a mile up to road to the Deseret Peak Complex. That place has everything including Chariot Races on Saturday afternoons! Seriously! Rick promised I could go to them but I can't remember what I have to do to full fill my side. Crap!
Next we visited the Phillips 66 on Main Street in Tooele. They have very clean bathrooms unlike the Mavrick at the entrance to Stansbury Park. PLEASE - DO NOT STOP THERE! They are horrible. Just keep on driving the mile to our home and if you don't want to go in my home, stop at the Flying J in Lake Point. Their's aren't too bad either.
So anyway, we had our drinks, my orange cream icee cause it isn't carbonated! And we were off to find all the golf courses in Tooele.
We went to the Oquirrh Hills Golf Course which is near the mountain. They have a lovely driving range. We also drove part way up Middle Canyon. I saw some critters up on the edge of the hill. They looked like Ostriches. I am going to find out.
Then we found The Links at Overlake. That place was a crack up. Seriously, you drive on gravel roads to get there! This is the GOOD road.
The place was as flat as could be. The funniest part of it all was that the parking lot was half full of pick-up trucks and it was snowing! That's right ~ there were tons of people out playing on January 3oth with flurries flying all around them.
I knew that Tooele would be hard to live in but seriously!

Cause He's That Awesome
When all this house stuff started, the Dude told me that he wanted to have new towels in the bathroom. I said, Cool.
Then he told me that he wants new pots and pans. I thought, this is Great.
Yesterday he told me, "We need to get some really nice hand towels for the guest bathroom and the kitchen. You know, ones what we don't use but LOOK really good."
How dang awesome is that!?!
